What are some of the physiological ways that children are different from adults?
A
- Different surface area:volume – more easily get cold
- More water content % - more easily dehydrated
- Less sugar stores (metabolic reserves) – more easily hypoglycaemia
- Faster pulse, respiratory rate
- Lower blood pressure and maintained until very shocked
- Immune system robust, need to have infection before become immune – between 4 months and 5 years have many infections (before 4 months have Ig from mother)]
- Development – unable to walk, speak, doubly incontinent, free GOR – so need to have understanding of when these things become abnormal
