Who is considered dangerous?
Particular groups such as children, youth, black people and those with mental health issues
Why are young people considered dangerous/
They resist adult power and disrupt adult order on the streets. They embody discourses of power e.g. graffiti, vandalism, drinking
How is this fear exaggerated?
Through the media
What is the stereotype of young-gay men?
If they have HIV and AIDS they are guilty and deserving. Society’s reaction to HIV positive men in the 1980s caused panic
What are fears in the US for youth?
Teenagers can be stopped and searched. There is a racial element in some cases
Give an example of a racial abuse.
On August 9, 2015, an unarmed 18-year-old African American teenager was shot and killed by a white police officer in Missouri
What are fears in the UK?
Children are labelled as the problem, however the blame is laid on the parents
Why is there a fear being hoodies?
Hoodies are associated with anti-social behaviour that strikes fear. Linked with mystery.
Why are hoodies banned in some shops?
Because of the link to fear however some shops will still sell the clothing
When did riots take place in LA? why?
- Video of police beating was read against visible racism
Why is there fear against the “black body”?
Violence was understood to be associated with the black male body even though black people have felt more fear from white people
What are negative stereotypes of black person?
Criminal, dysfunctional parents, broken families
