Children and young people should
Be kept fully informed as possible about their care and treatment

Be able to consent to treatment when they have sufficient understanding and intelligence

An understanding of the nature and purpose of the proposed procedure
An understanding of the risks
An understanding of alternatives
Freedom from undue pressure
Assessment of childrens competence should take into account the following factors
Cognitive development Ability to balance risks and benefits of treatment Confidentiality and involving parents Benefits Preventing Harm
Children under the age of 16 refusal or consent to treatment
In scotland, if a child of any age has been deemed to be competent to obtain consent from they have the right to refuse treatment
