How where children previously viewed by society?
- Childhood as a concept was did not exist
- Once a kid was physically dependent they weren’t seen of having any different needs as adults
- viewed as mini adults with no distinction between them and adults

- 20th centaury coined as the “centaury of the child”
- Aries believed that childhood is socially constructed
- this began when schools where pushed as being a place of education for the young and acted as a driving force in current childhood culture
what are some reasons for he change in position of children?
- Laws restricting child labor made it that children became a liability rather then an asset
- Introduction of compulsory school where as before it was a choice
- lower infant mortality rate and declining in family size
- children development became the subject of medical knowledge

He said that fathers may help out with childcare but the mother takes more responsibility with the kids

- Men gain more from women’s domestic work then they do financially give back
