ASD have an association with which neurological condition?
Epilepsy
State some mild comorbidities for ASD
Inattention/poor organisation, anxiety and mood disorders, dyspraxia.
State some severe comorbidities for ASD
LD, language and other developmental problems, hyperactivity, behavioural issues (e.g. self-harm).
Name some pharmacological options in ASD
Risperidone/Aripiprazole - useful in the short term for significant aggression, tantrums or self-injury.
Methylphenidate - can help combat ADHD symptoms.
What are the 3 essential criteria for a LD to be diagnosed?
1) IQ <70
2) Developmental aetiology (i.e. <18)
3) Deficits in adaptive functioning
What is the commonest type of LD?
Mild
State the IQ ranges for the different types of LD
Mild = 50-69 Moderate = 35-49 Severe = 20-34 Profound = <20
State the mental age ranges for the different types of LD
Mild = 9-12 y/o Moderate = 6-9 y/o Severe = 3-6 y/o Profound = <3 y/o
What are some antenatal causes of LD? (4)
Infections, hypoxia, nutritional growth retardation and hypothyroidism
What are some postnatal causes of LD? (3)
Injury, infections and impoverished environment
