Child Language Flashcards

Q
Skinner ( Behaviourist Theory )

- However, some children overextend language forms suggesting language is not completely imitated.
- Children often make virtuous errors too this wouldn’t occur if all language was imitated.

Q
Chomsky ( Nativist Theory )
A
- Children are born with an innate capacity for language development
- The brain is ‘programmed’ to instantly begin to make sense of utterances
- Children have the LAD (language acquisition device )
They use this to work out what language is acceptable or not
3
Q
Piaget ( Cognitive Theory )
A
- This suggests that linguistic structures can only be used if the child understands the concept behind it.
- They must understand the concept to linguistically express their wants
4
Q
Bruner ( Interactive Theory)
A
- Adults alter the way they talk to children. They use child-directed speech that uses simplified utterances, intonation and extra information.
- Adults will also expand on the child’s speech to enable the child to build on what they know.
5
Q
Vygotsky ( Zone of proximal development )
