Child Directed Speech Flashcards
Why do parents use rising and falling intonation when speaking to babies?
Because it adds musicality and rhythm to language so it’ll engage them more
Why do parents ask question and prompt them?
They do this in order to keep the engaged and to try and develop their understanding of things
What do parents do to keep their child engaged and focused more?
They use their name a lot so they know exactly who they’re talking to
Why do carers use repetition?
So the baby can understand more and it adds rhythm also
Why don’t parents correct them if they get it wrong?
Because it’s too harsh and the child may not learn from it. they rephrase and repeat until the baby gets it right.
What do parents use paralinguistics for?
For a more visual representation of what they’re saying to the baby. It’s more animated
What do the parents do that can reinforce turn taking and help the child understand more?
They talk slower and with frequent pauses
Why do parents adopt a child’s lexis?
Because it makes it easier for the child and can have an emotional attachment to a certain word as it could mean something
Why do parents use more concrete nouns over abstract?
This is because concrete nouns can be seen and don’t take much understanding whereas abstract nouns can’t, they’re a feeling or a thought making it harder to understand
Why do parents use proper nouns instead of pronouns?
Because pronouns could easily confuse a baby as one minute they’re “you” and next daddy is “you”
Why do parents use repetition of sentence structures?
Because it allows the child to develop an understanding of how it all works.
