Germinal Stage (1-2 wks)
Sperm + Egg = Zygote
- undergoes mitosis (cells divide to create embryo)
Embryonic Stage (3-8 wks)
Placenta (provides food and nutrients) is formed to protect embryo
Fetal Stage
Rapid development (the baby’s body forms)
(Around 36 wks, the baby is fully developed)
Teratogens
Factors that could harm a developing child in the utero
- Avoid drugs and alcohol, eat a balanced diet, take vitamins, etc.
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS)
- Difficulties with social interaction
- Epileptic seizures
- Changes in facial appearance and expression
- Cognitive delay
Contact Comfort
Physical and emotional comfort an infant receives from being in physical contact with it’s mother

Stages of Separation: 1) Secure
A baby is distressed when their mother leaves
Stages of Separation: 2) Resistant
Baby has intense distress when their mother leaves
Stages of Separation: 3) Avoidant
A baby shows no signs of distress when their mother leaves
Stages of Stranger Anxiety: 1) Secure
A baby is avoidant of a stranger when they are alone but friendly when their mother is present

A baby avoids stranger and shows fear

A baby is okay and behaves normally when a stranger is present and their mother is not around

A baby is positive and happy when their mother returns
