Communicative competence
A
- the ability to form accurate and understandable utterences using the grammer system
- to understand socail context for using them

Pre-verbal Stage
A
- (0-12 months)
- experimenting with noises/sounds but wihtout producing recognisable words
- can be broken down into the vegetative stage, cooing and babbling

Vegetative Stage
A
- (0-7 months)
- Vegetative Stage is when the baby makes discomfort sounds such as crying, as a way of expressing thoughts and feelings

Crying
A
- The first noise a baby makes
- excersises the vocal cords in order to:
- learn to make different sounds
- learn that noise with gain attention
- signal a physical need or want such as hunger or tiredness
- studies suggest parents recognise when the babies crying changes its intensity

Non-vocal Interactions
A
- before communication can be achieved through speech, babies are able to communicate through gestures, such as pointing

Cooing
A
- (4-6 months)
- not yet forming recognisable vowles and consonants
- experiments with noises made when the tongue and back of mouth come into contact
- the baby begins to develop control over the vocal muscles

A
- starts around 4 months

Babbling Stage
A
- (6-12 months)
- the baby produces phonemes, often in the fomr of consonants and vowels
- (ma, ga, ba, baba, dada, gaga)
- they are largely thoses that appear in the childs native language
