What is Development Theory?
organized explanations of child development that allow prediction of child behavior
what is Psychoanalytic theory?
- first theory to describe stages of development through the childhood
- biological urges to move each person though a series of stages that shape the personality
Three personality parts
ID:
- our basic instinctual drive
Ego:
- ability to negotiate between the demands of basic drives and the real world
Superego:
- maintaining the moral principles that work against the drive motivated functioning of ID
Freud’s Psychosexual Stage meaning
- believed our most basic drive is the sex drive
- our thoughts & feelings about sexuality is hidden in our unconscious mind
What are the 5 stages of psychosexual stage?
Oral stage (birth to 18 months)
Anal stage (18 months to 3 years)
Phallic stage (3 years to 6 years)
Latency stage (6 years to 12 years)
Genital stage (12 years to adolescent)
What is the Oral stage?
infants stimulate their mouth, lips or tongue
What is the Anal stage?
pleasure center moves to anus & toilet training becomes more central
What is the Phallic stage?
sexual energy becomes focused on genitals. boys and girls develop the family romance
What is the Latency stage?
sex drive becomes inactive
What is the Genital stage?
sexual energy becomes focused on the genital area and a more mature sexual interest develops between peers
Erikson’s psychosocial stage
- believed that issues of the ego are more important than those linked with the ID
- ## believed that the development of identity is the central issue for children and adolescents
