What is child abuse?
The recurrent infliction of physical or emotional injury on a dependent minor, through intentional beatings, uncontrolled corporal punishment, persistent ridicule and degradation, or sexual abuse.
Who usually commits child abuse?
parents, guardians, or caretakers
What is Child neglect?
The failure of those responsible for the care of a minor to provide the resources needed for healthy physical, emotional, and social development.
What is the difference between child neglect and abuse?
Child abuse is seen as wilful, whereas, neglect is a lack of abilities or resources.
Name 3 physical indicators of abuse
1.The presence of multiple injuries in different stages of healing
2. The history ‘doesn’t fit’
3. Bruises on soft body parts of typically protected body parts (e.g., buttocks, abdomen,
genitals).
3 Indications of neglect
- A variety of behavioral problems, due to lack of limits from caregivers
- Hoarding or stealing of food
- Self-stimulatory behavior or attempts to comfort themselves instead of turning to adults
3 behaviors indicating abuse
- Frozen watchfulness
- Regressive behavior
- Difficulty concentrating
3 Physical/behavioral indicators of S.A.
- Fecal or urinary incontinence after potty training; or other regressive behaviors (such as thumbsucking)
- Not wanting to be left alone with certain people or new fear of being away from primary caregiver(s)
- Mimicking sex/pelvic thrusting
