According to which SC Code of Law describes child
Title 63
According to 63-7-20 a child is described as
a person under the age of eighteen when considered as dependent or neglected
Define child abuse, neglect, and excessive corporal punishment according to 63-7-20
Inflicts or allows to be inflicted upon the child physical or mental injury or engages in acts or omissions which present a substantial risk of physical or mental injury to the child, including injuries sustained as a result of excessive corporal punishment,
but excluding corporal punishment or physical discipline which; commits or allows to be committed against the child a sexual offense; fails to supply the child with adequate food, clothing, shelter, or education as
required under Article 1 of Chapter 65 of Title 59, supervision appropriate to the
child’s age and development, or health care

Vulnerability of Children
a. The child shows sudden changes in behavior at home or at school.
b. The child has not received help for a physical or medical problem that has been
brought to the attention of the parent.
c. The child is always watchful as if preparing for something bad to happen.
d. The child lacks adult supervision.
e. The child is reluctant or afraid to be around a certain person
Indicators of Parental Maltreatment of Children
a. The parent denies the existence of any problems or issues the child may be having
at home or at school.
b. The parent sees the child as being a bad kid, worthless, and/or always causing
problems.
c. The parent demands a level of academic or physical performance that the child is
unable to achieve.
d. The parent shows little concern for the child
How Children Experience Their Abuse
a. They may not be able to protect themselves because of their physical, mental, or
emotional development.
b. These crimes are committed in private places, one on one, so there are no witnesses
and no accomplices.
c. The children do not like talking about the abuse and, as a result, they may delay
disclosure or tell only part of the story.
d. Many times there is an emotional bond between the offender and the child. The
child wants the abuse to stop but does not want the offender punished.
e. There is oftentimes no conclusive medical evidence of the abuse.
f. Many times children whether victims or witnesses are often viewed as less credible
or less competent than the abuser
A significantly older individual who engages in any type of
sexual activity with individuals legally defined as children
Child molester
A person who has a sexual preference for children. Diagnostic
criteria for pedophilia require there be fantasies, urges, or behaviors that are recurrent, intense, and sexually arousing and all of which involve prepubescent children, generally age 13 or younger
Pedophile
This is a broad term used to encompass all of the ways in which a child can be sexually victimized. There are several forms of sexual victimization such as sexual abuse of children, sexual exploitation of children, sexual assault of children, and sexual abduction of children.
Sexual Victimization of Children
It includes victimization involving sex rings, child pornography, (e.g., use of information technology such as computers, the internet, and digital memory storage devices); sex tourism and child prostitution
Sexual Exploitation of Children
child molesters do not have a sexual preference for children but
will engage in sex with children for complex reasons
Situational Child Molester
child molesters are individuals who have a sexual preference
for children. This very often includes gender, age, and ethnicity.
Preferential child molester
loves everyone and is loved by children. These types of
acquaintance offenders typically sexually exploit children through seduction and/or the collection, creation, and distribution of child pornography
Nice-Guy Offender
According to SC Code 63-7-920 a law enforcement has the authority to interview the child and other children in the home at
a school, childcare, home, outside of the presence of parents
