Physical abuse
Actual or likely physical injury to a child
or
failure to prevent physical injury.
Sexual Abuse
Forcing or enticing a child to take part in sexual activity whether or not the child is aware.
May involve physical contact, penetrative or non-penetrative acts.
They may involve non-contact activities (i.e. children looking at pornography) or encouraging child to act sexually (inappropriately)
Neglect
Persistent failure to meet a child’s
basic physical or psychological needs
likely to result in
serious impairment of
the child’s health or development.
Failure to provide adequate food, shelter and clothing
Failing to protect a child from physical harm or danger
Failure to ensure access to appropriate medical care

Person 16 or over who
has responsibility for a child or young person
under 16
wilfully
Assaults, ill-treats, neglects, abandons or exposes him / her
or
Causes or procures him / her to be
Assaulted, ill treated, neglected, abandoned or exposed

PPO
Where a constable has reasonable cause to believe that a child would otherwise be likely to suffer significant harm, he may—
(a) remove the child to suitable accommodation and keep him there;
or
(b) take such steps as are reasonable to ensure the child’s removal from any hospital, or other place, in which he is then being accommodated is prevented.
