Define Hegemony. What are it’s applications to what we have studied?
When one dominate state exerts power over another non dominate.
—colonization; ethnocentrism- when people from another country come here? When we go to other countries. When we are in respective countries
Define dichotomy
“corner stone of western thought” illegitimate thought vs legitimate thought (or academics) ; complete contrasts. latino studies(IT) v chemistry(LT) it's a dichotomy ---hard to study if class isn't legit ; also then "Latinos history isn't legit?"
Define Dialectic
History changes depending on whose perspective you’re getting the information from. Remember that SVU? They all describe a different van, well that’s probably what history is like.
—-take everything with a grain of salt.
Define Culture
Socially transmitted behaviors, beliefs, art, food, music, religion, clothing, etc and other aspects of ones day to day life
—unique culture brings unique ideas and perspectives
Sociological Imagination
Try to leave your “baggage”,(ideas/views)at the door; your biography in relation to history; be able to shift your perspective,, everything you believe may not be/is not true
Social Location is the fact that you are may change depending on where you are. What are the applications of that?
important to understanding the latino community! Just because you see a 23 year old guy walking down the street wearing Js and a bandana drinking a beer, etc.. doesn’t make him a thug. Tomorrow he works in a nursing home or is in the army. This applies to all minorities. Remember #iftheygunnedmedownwhichpicturewouldtheyuse ? Stop and frisk laws! Judging people by skin color and style of dress, music etc is not okay. They might be listening to rap and playing ball right now(scary) but this morning on his shift as emts they saved a mom and her two twin babies. SOCIAL LOCATION
What 4 things do you need before you can be a sovereign nation?
o Self sustained govt
o Land
o Common interest in sovereignty
o Ability/historical context
