Chest Muscles Flashcards
Pectoralis Major
Origin:
Clavicular head: medial half of clavicle. Sternocostal head: anterior surface of sternum, Superior six costal cartilages, and aponeurosis of external oblique muscle
Insertion:
Lateral lip of intertubercular sulcus of humerus
Function:
Flexes, adducts & medially rotates humerus
Pectoralis Minor
Origin:
3rd to 5th ribs near their costal cartilages
Insertion:
Coracoid process of scapula
Function:
Draws scapula forward & downward
Serratus Anterior
Origin:
Lateral surface of ribs 1-8 (or 9)
Insertion:
Anterior surface of medial border of the scapula
Function:
Protracts & stabilizes scapula, Assists in upward rotation
Subclavius
Origin:
Junction of 1st rib & Costal cartilage
Insertion:
Groove on the inferior surface of clavicle
Function:
Stabilizes & depresses clavicle
Intercostals (External, Internal, Innermost)
Origin:
Inferior border of the rib above
Insertion:
Superior border of the rib below
Function:
External: elevate ribs, expand thoracic cavity for inspiration. Internal & Innermost: depress ribs, diminish thoracic cavity for expiration
