Chess 1st to 3rd rank Flashcards
A1
Black / this diagonal is alphabetically and numerically equivalent, in other words A1 then B2 then C3, D4, E5, F6, G7, H8 are all Black squares.
B1
White - the starting square for the White Knight that normally develops to C3 - Black square.
C1
Black - starting square for White’s bishop, which many times I like to fianchettoe to b2 along the dark-square diagonal that the letters and numbers correspond (a1, b2, c3, d4, etc…)
D1
White - Where the White queen begins the game.
E1
Black - Where the White King begins the game.
F1
White - where the light-colored White CATALAN bishop begins the game (F1 = White, not surprising and goes to G2.)
G1
Black - where the White knight begins the game that normally jumps out to the White F3 square.
H1
White - White to the right when setting up the pieces. This is where the rook that you usually castle kingside begins the game.
A2
White - Pawn in front of the White rook starting square.
B2
Black - common fianchettoe square for White’s dark-squared bishop.
C2
White - pawn in front of the White’s dark bishop starting square.
D2
Black - pawn in front of the White queen. This is the pawn I move first when playing White, from one dark square (D2) to another (D4).
E2
White - pawn in front of the White King which E-Pawn players play going from E2 to E4 one White square to another.
F2
Black - pawn in front of White’s dark light-squared bishop which will go to g3 to fianchetto in the Catalan.
G2
White - Catalan Bishop square when I go with the Catalan opening with White. Moving from F1 to G2 both White squares.
H2
Black - pawn in front of White’s rook on (h1) - white to the right starting position. For the Cat I have f2(black) g3(black) and h2(black) around the cat bishop on g2(white)
A3
Black - sometimes the dark bishop starting on C1 jumps out to A3 to attack the rook that has castled kingside for the Black pieces.
B3
White
C3
Black - the common square the White Knight from B1 develops too early in the game.
D3
White - of course as a D4 (Black) player I should know that the square before this is White. I always start D2(black) to D4(black) so this is the one square I always skip over.
E3
Black - a common pawn move by me as White going e3 with the drawback being that I block in the dark-squared bishop.
F3
White - a common square that the White Knight develops too from G1 (Black square).
G3
Black - When I play as White and open with the Catalan a common pawn move is G2 (White square) to G3 (Black).
H3
White - When I castle Kingside with White this is the common pawn move to provide luft or to stop the bishop coming down to G4 (White) to attack the Knight on F3 (White)
