Where is it and what year was it restored
A
Seoul South Korea. The river was badly damaged until it was restored from 2003.

Why did it need to be restored?
A
The stream was completely covered over from 1958 to 1961 after which an expressway was built over it.
- No vegetation preventing evapotranspiration.
- River was completely covered so no evaporation and all inputs went to urban drainage and waste water
- Poor water quality

What were the aims of the project?
A
- Pedestrian corridor that improves the environment.
- Dismantle the freeway and concrete deck.
- Improve quality of life for people in Seoul.

Features of the scheme
A
- Rapid bus lanes added, car use discouraged
- 22 bridges added in total
- Waterfalls and fountains to increase oxygen supply

A
- Flowrates maintained at a constant rate
- Provides flood protection for up to 200 years
- Increased biodiversity with more plant and fish species.
- Reduced air temperature
- Increased evapotranspiration
