Chemotherapy Flashcards
What is an example of an alkylating agent?
Cyclophosphamide
How do alkylating agents work?
Causes cross lining in DNA
What are some adverse effects of cyclophosphamide?
Haemorrhagic cystitis, myelosupression, transitional cell carcinoma
What are examples of cytotoxic antibiotics?
Bleomycin, anthracyclines (e.g doxorubicin)
What is the main adverse defect of bleomycin to be aware of?
Lung fibrosis
What is the main adverse effect of doxorubicin to be aware of?
Cardiomyopathy
What is meant by the term neoadjuvant?
Administration of a therapeutic agent before definitive treatment to shrink tumour and optimise outcomes
What is meant by the term adjuvant?
Treatment given after definitive treatment to reduce the risk of disease recurrence
What is meant by the term palliative cancer therapy?
Treatment designed to relieve symptoms and improve quality of life
What are the different classes of chemotherapeutic agents?
Alkylating agents, taxanes, vinka alkaloids, platinum complexes, anti metabolites, anthracyclines, anti tumour antibiotics, topoisomerase inhibitors
What are examples of taxanes?
Paclitaxel, docetaxel, cabazitaxel
How do taxanes work?
Bins to microtubules which inhibits anaphase
What are adverse effects of taxanes?
Alopecia, peripheral neuropathy
What are examples of vinka alkaloids?
Vincristine, vinorelbine
What is the main adverse effect of vinka alkaloids?
Peripheral neuropathy
