Chemo/TPN Flashcards
Peripheral Parenteral Nutrition (PPN)
- Temporary
- Provides only partial amount of needed nutrients
- rarely given long term due to extravasation
Total Parenteral Nutrition
- Comprised of sterile water, dextrose, amino acids, fat emulsion, electrolytes, vitamins, and minerals
- Other meications are usually avoided but there are exceptions: Insulin, H2 Antagonist, and heparin
Risks of TPN’s
- Contamination
- Incompatibility:
- therapeutic (effectiveness)
- chemical (chemical change)
- physical (precipitates)
Cytotoxic
-Kills cells, even healthy ones
Antineoplastic
-Reduces growth, even healthy ones
Immunosuppressive
-Suppresses immune system
3 Classifications of Chemotherapy Drugs
- Primary
- Adjuvant
- Palliative
Primary Chemo Drugs
-Intended to cure patients
Adjuvant Chemo Drugs
-Follow up treatment post-surgery
Palliative Chemo Drugs
-For incurable cancers, meant to help reduce the size or progression to give patient some quality of life
Alkylating Drugs
-Stops DNA replications
Antimetabolite
Blocks nutrients uptake of cells which reduces cell growth
Antimicrotubule
-interferes with cell growth and formation
Chemotherapeutic Antibiotics
-Inhibit RNA synthesis (also slows and prevents mitosis)
Hormone Therapy
-Interferes with certain proteins in cancer cells, which inhibits growth
