Chemisty Key Terms Flashcards
What is neutralisation?
The reaction between an acid and a base which creates salt and water
What is a base?
A base is a substance which reacts with an acid to create salt and water
What is an alkali?
An alkali is a soluble base
What is an indicator?
A chemical which changes colour depending on whether it is in acid or a base
What does atoms into ions mean?
When an atom either gains or loses electrons or becomes an ion
What is an atomic number?
An atomic number is the number of protons in an atom
What is the atomic mass or mass number?
The amount of protons and neutrons combined in the nucleus
What is an element?
An element is a substance which contains only one type of atom and can not be broken down by anything of chemical means
What is a compound?
A compound is two or more elements chemically combined
What is a molecule?
A molecule is two or more atoms which are covalently bonded
What is ionic bonding?
When a metal transfers electrons to a none metal
What is the ionic bond?
Attraction between ions of opposite charge
What is covalent bonding?
The sharing of pairs of electrons between non-metals
What is the covalent bond?
A bond formed by a shared pair of electrons
What is metallic bonding?
Attraction between de-localised electrons and the positive ions in a regular lattice
