chemisty Flashcards
Polymer-
a large molecule that is formed by more than five monomer, or smaller units.
Mass-
a measure of the quantity of matter. Represented in units of grams. Does not depend on gravity.
(e.g. the amount of atoms that make up an object)
Volume
The amount of space that an object occupies. Measured in units of Liters.
Density-
is the ratio of mass to volume
Qualitative:
refers to the general quality of a characteristic (tall, short, long, wide)
Quantitiative
refers to the quantity of a characteristic (how tall, how short, how long, how wide)
Always includes a number.
Scientific Notation:
used to make very large or very small numbers easier to handle/ work with.
45,000,000,000,000,000 can be written as 4.5 X 1016
A graph should always…
- Fill up at least half of the graph paper.
- Have each grid line represent an equal increment.
- Have labels on the x and y axis including UNITS in
parentheses. - Have a descriptive title (i.e. y-axis v. x-axis or the slope of the
line). - Have a best fit line/curve that goes through the data points.
Interpolate-
a method of constructing new data points within the range of known data points.
Significant Figures
in a measurement consist of all the digits known with certainty plus one final digit,
which is somewhat uncertain or is estimated.
Precision
refers to the closeness of a set of measurements of the same quantity made in the
same way.
Accuracy
refers to the closeness of measurements to the correct or accepted value of the
quantity measured.
Experimental Error:
error that happens during experiments that is a result of limitations of the accuracy
of lab equipment and environmental conditions not because of mistakes or incorrect procedures
Percent Error
Compares your experimental value to the known value and tells you how far away from the known (target) you are.
