Chemistry y10 Flashcards
Testing for ions ( halide )
The halogen are elements in group 7 . (Chlorine ,bromine , iodine are halogens ) eg cl-.
How : The test solution Is acidified using a few drops of dilute nitric acid .
Reaction : And a few drops of silver nitrate solution are added . Different coloured silver halide precipitates form . Depends if the halide ion present
Testing for ions (halide answers )
Chloride ions give a white precipitate
Bromide ions give a cream precipitate
Iodine ions give a yellow precipitate
Testing for carbonate ions
Carbonate ions (CO3,2-) can be detected in a solid compound or solution .
How : An acid , dilute hydrochloric acid , is added to the test compound .
Reaction: CO2 gas bubbles If carbonate ions are present . Limewater is used to confirm that the gas is CO2 , If present turns from clear to milky
