Chemistry Week 1-2 Flashcards
What is diffusion?
The movement of particles from an area of high concentration to a lower concentration.
How can you tell when diffusion is complete?
When all particles are evenly mixed.
What are the smallest possible particles that can be produced my chemical reactions?
Atoms (Cannot be broken down further into smaller particles)
Particle Arrangement in Solids, Liquids and gases.
Solids: Particles Touching and regularly arranged.
Liquids: Close together irregularly arranged.
Gases: Far apart, randomly arranged.
Shape In all states?
Solids: Fixed
Liquids: Takes shape of container
Gases: Takes shape of container
Volume in all states?
solids: Fixed
Liquids: Fixed
Gases: Not fixed (Dependent on container)
Solid to Gas?
Sublimation
Gas to Solid?
Deposition

Condensation
Evaporation?
- Happens on surface
- Happens in a range of temperatures
- NO bubbles
- Energy from surroundings
- Slow
Boiling?
- Happens throughout the liquid
- Happens at a definite temp.
- Bubbles
- Faster
- Source of energy needed
