Chemistry Vocabulary - Unit 2 Flashcards
Atomic Mass Unit (amu)
a unit of mass used to express atomic and molecular weights
Isotope
each of two or more forms of the same element that contain equal numbers of protons but different numbers of neutrons in their nuclei
Atomic Number
the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
Mass Number
the total number of protons and neutrons in a nucleus
Atomic Mass
the mass of an atom of a chemical element expressed in atomic mass units
Valence Electron
a single electron or one of two or more electrons in the outer shell of an atom that is responsible for the chemical properties of the atom
Half Life
the time taken for the radioactivity of a specified isotope to fall to half its original value
Electron
a stable subatomic particle with a charge of negative electricity, found in all atoms and acting as the primary carrier of electricity in solids
Proton
a stable subatomic particle occurring in all atomic nuclei, with a positive electric charge equal in magnitude to that of an electron, but of opposite sign
Neutron
a subatomic particle of about the same mass as a proton but without an electric charge, present in all atomic nuclei except those of ordinary hydrogen
Nucleus
the membrane-enclosed organelle within a cell that contains the chromosomes
Orbital
each of the actual or potential patterns of electron density that may be formed in an atom or molecule by one or more electrons
Ion
an atom or molecule with a net electric charge due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons
Atomic Radius
The radius of an atom
Electronegativity
a chemical property that describes the tendency of an atom or a functional group to attract electrons toward itself
