Chemistry Vocabulary Quiz Pt.1 Flashcards
Ions
An atom or molecule with a net electric charge due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons
Cation
A positive ion; indicates a loss of electron(s)
Anion
A negative ion; indicates a gain in electron(s)
Alkali metals
Group 1 on the periodic table that will often form a cation; +1 charge
Halogens
Group 17 on the periodic table that will often form an anion; -1 charge
Valence electrons
Are the bonding electrons of an atom that are found in the outermost energy level (shell)
Compounds
A distinct group of atoms held together by chemical bonds
Two main types of bonds
- Covalent bonds
2. Ionic bonds
Covalent bonds
Formed when two atoms share a pair of electrons
Ionic bonds
Electrons are fully transferred between two atoms so that ions are formed
Aluminum chlorohydrate
Utilized in underarm antiperspirant products (deodorant)
Hydrazine
Used in rocket fuels
Acetylsalicylic acid
Asprin: medicine used to reduce pain, fever or inflammation
Ethylene glycol
Found in anti-freeze; also utilized to manufacture polyester fibers
Ethanol
Simple alcohol that can be found in beverages or utilized as a fuel additive
