Chemistry Vocab Flashcards
Noble Gases
In Group 8A (18). All have 8 electrons at highest energy level (valance electrons). Share similar properties.
Halogens
Group 7A (17). All have 7 electrons at highest energy level (valance electrons). Share similar properties.
Alkali Metal
Group 1A (1). All have 1 electron at highest energy level (valance electron). Share similar properties.
Transition Metals
LATER
Alkali Earth Metals
Group 2A (2). All have 2 electrons at highest energy level (valance electrons). Share similar properties.
Covalent Bonds
A bond between a nonmetal and a nonmetal when electrons are shared.
Ionic Bonds
A bond that is (almost always) between a metal and a nonmetal. One element gives another element electrons. They are oppositly charged ions that are attracted to each other.
Single Bonds
2 electrons, 2 elements. Straight bond.
Double Bonds
Between 2 elements. Curved bonds. 4 electrons.
Triple Bonds
2 elements, 6 electrons. Nitrogen, Carbon, and recently discovered Boron form triple bonds.
Periodic Table
The table of elements. Organized by groups and periods.
Element
A pure substance found in nature.
Atomic Number
The number of protons a specific element has.
Periods
Horizontal rows in the periodic table. Mark the number of occupied energy levels (electron cloulds/shells being used).
Groups
The columns in the periodic table. Mark the number of valance electrons.
