Chemistry unit test Flashcards
What are the three main types of elements on the periodic table?
Metals, Non-metals and Metalloides
Characteristics of Alkali Metals
Soft grey metals and very reactive
Characteristics of Alkaline earth metals
Grey metals, harder and less reactive than group 1
Group 17 in the periodic table is…
Halogens
Colourful, non-metals, reactive
Group 18 on the periodic table is…
Noble gases
colourless and odorless
not reactive
What do elements in the same group have in common?
They have the same number of valence electrons.
Ex. Group 5 has 5 valence electrons
An ionic compound is made of…
1 metal and 1 non-metal (positive and negative)
Stop and try the Criss Cross method
.
What is a multivalent ion?
Multivalent ions could have more than one possible charge (Ex: Fe3+, Fe2+). These are the ions/elements that need to have the roman numeral included in their name (Ex: Iron (III) oxide. Which is Fe2O3).
What is a polyatomic ion?
When multiple atoms work together to create an ion with a single charge.
What is a Molecular compound?
A non-metal and a non-metal
What are the Diatomic molecules?
Bromine, chlorine, fluorine, hydrogen, iodine, nitrogen, oxygen
What are the state symbols?
S=solid L=liquid G=Gas
What is the law of Conservation of mass?
This means in a chemical reaction, the mass of the product is always equal to the mass of the reactants
Synthesis reaction
A+B–AB
