Chemistry unit test 1 (reactions) Flashcards
What are the three types of double displacement reactions?
Acid/Base reaction - neutralization (Reactions that form water)
Precipitation reaction (Reactions that form solid)
Unstable product - undergoes subsequent decomposition (Reactions that form gas)
What can a metal replace in a displacement reaction?
Another metal or hydrogen IF the metal is HIGHER on the series
What can a non-metal replace in a displacement reaction?
Another non-metal IF the non-metal is HIGHER on the series
What happens when a double displacement reaction creates an unstable product?
A gas is produced, which then undergoes immediate decomposition into water and a gas
What are the 5 main types of chemical reactions?
Synthesis
Decomposition
Combustion
Single displacement
Double displacement
What is synthesis?
many reactants, one product
What is decomposition?
one reactant, many products
What is combustion?
burning in o2, common products : H20 + C02
What is single displacement?
metal replaces another metal in a compound
What is double displacement?
both metals replace each other
What are the four types of synthesis reactions?
Synthesis of an ionic compound (metal + non-metal : sodium chloride)
Synthesis of an oxide, metal or non-metal (02 is a reactant)
Synthesis of a base (metal oxide in water)
Synthesis of an acid (non-metal oxide in water)
What are the four types of decomposition reactions?
Decomposition of a binary compound INTO its elements
Decomposition of a metal nitrate INTO a metal nitrate and oxygen gas
Decomposition of a metal carbonate INTO a metal oxide and carbon (IV oxide gas)
Decomposition of a metal hyrdoxide INTO metal oxide and water
What are the two unstable products that undergo immediate decomposition?
H2CO3 Carbonic acid -> H2O(l) + CO2(g)
NH4OH Ammonium hydroxide -> H2O(l) + NH3(g)
What usually accompanies a complete combustion reaction?
No visible products
Light and heat
Invisible blue flame
What usually accompanies a incomplete combustion reaction?
Visible products
Vapour
Soot
Yellow flame
