Chemistry Unit 3 - Periodic Table + Chemical Equations Flashcards
What is an atom?
Smallest part of matter that can take part in a chemical reaction.
What is an element?
A substance that is made from only one type of atom. Meaning each atoms nucleus has the same number of protons.
What is a molecule?
Two or more atoms chemically bonded.
What is a compound?
A substance made from more than one type of atom that is chemically bonded.
How is the periodic table organised?
Group 1 - Alkali metals
Group 2- earth metals
Group 7 - halogen
Group 8/0 - noble gas
Middle section is transition metals
Who is responsible for the current layout of the periodic table?
Dmitri Mendeleev
What is an chemical change?
It is not easily reverse, new substances are made as well as new bonds and it takes place on a molecular level.
What is a physical change?
No new substances are made, it can be easily reversed.
What methods can you use to separate products of a physical change?
Chromatography, Filtration, Evaporation, Distillation
What is chromatography?
It is the separation of mixtures based on different solubilities.
What is filtration?
It is used to separate a suspended solid matter from a liquid by passing it through a filter.
What is distillation?
It is the process of separating 2 different liquids qinhuangdao different boiling points.
What is evaporation?
It is used to separate a solute and a solvent when the solvent is boiled away.
What is the Law of Conservation of Matter?
Mass is neither gained nor destroyed in a chemical reaction. It is simply rearranged in space.
