Chemistry: Unit 2 Flashcards
Chemistry
the science that deals with the composition and properties of substances and various elementary forms of matter.
Matter
Matter is defined as anything that has mass and takes up space
Extensive Properties
a physical property of a system that does not depend on the system size or the amount of material in the system
Intensive Properties
density and color, do not depend on the amount of matter.
Mass
A measure of how much matter is in an object.
Volume
he volume of an object is a measure of the amount of space occupied by that object
Physical Property
hat do change the chemical nature of matter.
Physical Change
a change in which no new substances are formed
Chemical Property
characteristic of a substance that is observed during a reaction in which the chemical composition or identity of the substance is changed
Chemical Change
irreversible chemical reaction involving the rearrangement of the atoms of one or more substances and a change in their chemical properties or composition
Phase (Phase of Matter)
The states in which matter can exist: as a solid, liquid, or gas.
Solid
The molecules in solids are closely bound together, they can only vibrate.
Liquid
. A phase of matter in which atoms or molecules can move freely while remaining in contact with one another
Gas
a substance (such as oxygen or hydrogen) that is like air and has no fixed shape
Freezing
he process when a liquid turns into a solid
Melting
to change or to cause (something) to change from a solid to a liquid
Vaporization
physics and chemistry, the conversion of a solid or a liquid into a gas.
Condensation
the process by which water vapor in the air is changed into liquid water
Sublimation
When anything solid turns into a gas without first becoming liquid, that’s sublimation.
Deposition
the process by which rocks, sand and sediment are deposited by the forces of erosion
Substance (Pure Substance)
The pure substance within chemistry is a very simple concept to grasp
Element
A substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means.
Chemical Symbol
an abbreviation or short representation of a chemical element; the symbols in the periodic table.
Compound
The type of bonds holding elements together in a compound can vary: two common types are covalent bonds and ionic bonds.
