Chemistry: unit 2 Flashcards
Chemistry
A branch of science that deals with the identification of the substances of which matter is composed; the investigation of their properties and the ways in which they interact, combine and change; the use of the processes to form new substances.
Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space.
Extensive Properties
Such as mass and volume.
Intensive Properties
Such as color and density.
Mass
The amount of matter in an object.
Volume
The amount of space that a substance or object occupies, or that is enclosed within a container.
Physical Property
Any property that is measurable, whose value describes a state of a physical system, often referred to as observables.
Physical Change
A usually reversible change in the physical properties of a substance.
Chemical Property
A property or characteristic of a substance that is observed during a reaction in which the chemical composition or identity of the substance is changed
Chemical Change
A usually irreversible chemical reaction involving rearrangement of the atoms of one or more substances and a change in their chemical properties or composition.
Phase (phase of matter)
A distinct and homogeneous form of matter ( particularly solid, liquid or gas) separated by its surface from other forms.
Solid
A firm and stable in shape, not liquid or fluid.
Liquid
A substance that flows freely but is of constant volume, having a consistency like that of water or oil.
Gas
An airlike fluid substance which expands freely to fill any space available, irrespective of its quantity.
Freezing
To freeze, below 32 degrees fahrenheit.
Melting
Make or become liquefied by heat.
Vaporization
The state or act of being vaporized
Condensation
Water that collects as droplets on a cold surface when humid air is in contact with it.
Sublimation
When anything solid turns into a gas without first becoming liquid.
Deposition
The process where a gas changes phase and turns directly into a solid without passing through the liquid phase.
Substance (pure substance)
A particular kind of matter with uniform properties.
Element
A substance that can’t be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means.
Chemical Symbol
An abbreviation or short representation of a chemical element, the symbols in the periodic table.
Compound
A substance formed when two or more chemical elements are chemically bonded together.
