Chemistry: Unit 2 Flashcards
Chemistry
the branch of science that identifies the substances of which matter is composed
Matter
physical substance that takes up space and has mass
Extensive Properties
mass and volume of a substance
Intensive Properties
a bulky property ; hardness
example : color , boiling point , pressure , molecular , weight , and density
Mass
typically large body of matter with no definite shape
Volume
the amount of space that an object occupies
Physical Property
changing the chemical nature of matter
Examples : color , freezing point , smell , boiling point , melting point ,
Physical Change
a change without altering the chemical composition of a substance
Chemical Property
a property of a substance that is observed during a reaction in which the chemical composition in the substance is changed
Chemical Change
a chemical reaction involving the rearrangement of the atoms if one or more substances change in their chemical properties or composition resulting
Phase (phase of matter)
state in which matter can exist as a solid , liquid or gas
Solid
a state of matter characterized by particles arranged such that their shape and volume are relatively stable
Liquid
a state of matter that the substance is free to flow . the liquid has a definite volume an does not have a definite shape
Gas
a state of matter composed of molecules in constant random motion and has no fixed shape or form
Freezing
the process of which a substance changes from a liquid to a solid
