Chemistry Unit 1A Flashcards
What is chemistry?
The study of the composition, structure, and properties of matter and the changes it undergoes.
Hypothesis
a prediction concerning a testable question, often written as and “if then” statement.
Theory
a logical or mathematical explanation of a set of phenomena that can be used to predict future occurrences and capable of being tested or falsified.
SI Units
Meter, Kilogram, Seconds, Kelvin, Mole.
Density equals
Mass / volume
Volume equals
Mass / density
Height equals
Volume / (length x width)
Percent error formula is
(Experimental - the number found by you; minus Accepted - the number given) / accepted
Addition sig figs rule is
Round to least amount of decimal point sig figs
Multiplication sig figs rule is
Round to least amount of total sig figs
Centimeters cubed to meters cubed conversion factor
(100 cm) cubed = (1 m) cubed, 1x10^6 cm cubed = 1 m cubed
Physical property is
something that can be observed/measured without producing a new substance
Chemical property is
something that relates to the substance’s ability to undergo changes that transform it into new substances
10 Physical property examples
1) Malleable (can be bent or shaped), 2) freeze point or boiling point, 3) ability to dissolve, 4) color, 5) ductile (can be made into a wire), 6) phase of matter (solid, liquid, gas), 7) luster, 8) mass, 9) density, 10) magnestism
8 Chemical property examples
1) Corrosive, 2) combustible, 3) neutralizes acids, 4) releases energy when reacts with oxygen, 5) reacts with water, 6) baking, 7) decomposes, 8) precipitate (going from a dissolved substance to solid one)
