Chemistry Topic 1 Flashcards
Recall that the overall size of the flame can be adjusted by:
Opening and closing the gas tap
What is produced when the air hole is closed
Carbon (soot)
Why are substances heated using a blue flame
It is a gentle heat so we can use it to heat it without evaporating the substance and we can control the flame
Why is the Bunsen Burner left with a yellow flame
It is a safety flame so it doesn’t damage as much if it is knocked over and won’t hurt as much
Corrosive
It destroys living tissue including skin and eyes
Serious health hazard
More of a risk then health hazard but not as much as toxic
Toxic
Serious risk to health and can cause death
Highly flammable
Solids liquids and gases which catch fire easily in normal lab conditions
Dangerous to the environment
Causes damage to the environment if poured down the sink
Oxidising agent
These produce lots of heat when they react with other materials and create a fire risk
Explosive
These may explode if ignited in air, exposed to heat, a sudden shock or friction
Identify hazards in a lab environment
Hair up, ties tucked in, bags away, spillages, goggles or masks, things sticking out like stools and don’t run
Parts of a Bunsen Burner
Chimney, collar, air hole, base and gas tap
How to obtain different flames on a Bunsen burner
Rotating the collar
What air hole should the Bunsen Burner be lit with
Closed
