Chemistry Test Review Flashcards

1
Q

What are the 6 main ideas of the particle theory?

A

1) Matter is made up of tiny particles
2) Particles of matter are in constant motion
3) Particles of matter are held together
4) There are empty spaces between the particles of matter
5) All particles of one substance are identical. .
6) Temperature affects the speed of the particles.

15
Q

If the mass and volume are given to you, can you find out if the object will sink or float?

A

yes
M>V = sink M<V = float

16
Q

What test can be used to identify hydrogen gas?

A

a lighted splint is brought near the gas, and if hydrogen is present, it will burn with a characteristic “squeaky pop” sound

17
Q

What test can be used to identify oxygen gas?

A

you can use the glowing splint test: a glowing splint (a piece of wood with glowing embers) will relight when introduced into a test tube containing oxygen

18
Q

What tests can be used to identify carbon dioxide gas?

A

you can use the limewater test, where bubbling the gas through lime water (a solution of calcium hydroxide) will turn the limewater cloudy or milky due to the formation of a white precipitate of calcium carbonate

19
Q

What is a physical change?

A

a visible change in appearance of a substance but stays the same substance as before

20
Q

What is chemical change?

A

a change of substance/material from before

21
Q

What are the signs of physical change?

A

change in colour, temperature, and odor

22
Q

What are the signs of chemical change?

A

properties changed, 1+ new substances are formed, and a material changes into another

23
Q

What is the difference between physical and chemical change?

A

physical change is easily reversed and chemical change is rarely able to be reversed.

24
What is the mass of protons, neutrons, and electrons?
Protons - 1 Neutrons - 1 Electrons - 0
25
Does the atomic number change when protons, neutrons, electrons are added?
Protons - Yes Neutrons - Yes Electrons - No
26
Do protons, neutrons, and electrons change the substance/element when added?
Protons - Yes Neutrons - Yes Electrons - No
27
What is a pure substance?
A type of matter which cannot be separated by physical means that contains one type of particles.
28
What is a mixture?
A type of matter which can be separated by physical means that contains 2 or more types of particles.
29
What is the difference between an element and a compound?
An element is created from one type of atom. A compound is made from two or more elements
30
Identifying the group number will help find out what about an atom?
the number of valence electrons/ dots on the outer ring
31
Identifying the period number will help find out what about an atom?
the number of orbital shells an atom has
32
What group number are halogens found in?
Group 17
33
What group number are Alkali Metals found in?
Group 1 except Hydrogen
34
What group number are Alkaline Earth Metals found in?
Group 2
35
What group number are Noble Gases found in?
Group 18
36
What is a chemical formula?
a chemical formula shows the elements that make up the compound and the numbers of atoms for each element
37
What are the five rules of writing chemical formulas?
1) Write the symbol of the cation on the left and the symbol of the anion on the right. 2) Write the charge of each ion by the upper right of each symbol. 3) Cross the charges, IGNORING the signs. 4) Reduce the number to the "lowest common factor". 5) If the number beside an element is 1, do NOT write it.
