Chemistry Test Review Flashcards
What are the 6 main ideas of the particle theory?
1) Matter is made up of tiny particles
2) Particles of matter are in constant motion
3) Particles of matter are held together
4) There are empty spaces between the particles of matter
5) All particles of one substance are identical. .
6) Temperature affects the speed of the particles.
What is physical property?
A physical property is an aspect of matter that can be observed or measured without changing it.
What is chemical property?
A chemical property may only be observed by changing the chemical identity of a substance.
What is lustre?
The glowy appearance of a substance
What is boiling point?
when a liquid substance transitions into a gas
What is magnetic?
the attractivity of metal to an object
What is melting point?
the transition point of a solid substance to a liquid.
What is density?
the measure of how compact the mass is in a substance or object
What is malleability?
the ability to be shaped into something else without breaking
What is clarity/transparency?
the transparency of a substance
What is Ductility?
the ability to be bent into a wire like shape
what is reactivity with oxygen?
how a substance reacts to oxygen
what is reactivity with acids?
the ability of a substance to under go chemical reactions when exposed to acids
What is combusibility?
the measure of ease in which a substance bursts into flame
What factors affect the density of a substance?
the state of matter, temperature, and pressure
If the mass and volume are given to you, can you find out if the object will sink or float?
yes
M>V = sink M<V = float
What test can be used to identify hydrogen gas?
a lighted splint is brought near the gas, and if hydrogen is present, it will burn with a characteristic “squeaky pop” sound
What test can be used to identify oxygen gas?
you can use the glowing splint test: a glowing splint (a piece of wood with glowing embers) will relight when introduced into a test tube containing oxygen
What tests can be used to identify carbon dioxide gas?
you can use the limewater test, where bubbling the gas through lime water (a solution of calcium hydroxide) will turn the limewater cloudy or milky due to the formation of a white precipitate of calcium carbonate
What is a physical change?
a visible change in appearance of a substance but stays the same substance as before
What is chemical change?
a change of substance/material from before
What are the signs of physical change?
change in colour, temperature, and odor
What are the signs of chemical change?
properties changed, 1+ new substances are formed, and a material changes into another
What is the difference between physical and chemical change?
physical change is easily reversed and chemical change is rarely able to be reversed.
