Chemistry test Flashcards
to learn
what is an element
an element contains one type of atom and are bonded together to form molecules. All elements appear on the periodic table.
what is a compound
A substance containing at least two different elements that are chemically bonded together compounds do not appear on the periodic table
what is a mixture
a mixture contains at least two different substances that are not chemically bonded together
what does iron + sulphur make
iron sulphide
what are some examples of a compounds
iron sulphide
what are some examples of an element
iron,sulphur,oxygen
what does a physical change involve
it involves rearranging particles but the individual particles are not changed in any way they are also reversible
what is solvent
A liquid substance that can dissolve other substances
what is soluable
something that can dissolve in a solvent
what is insoluable
something that cant dissolve in a solvent
what is a solute
the substance that dissolves in the solvent
what is a solution
the mixture of a solute in a solvent
What does melting involve
melting involves one substance where the arrangement of the particles change from solid to liquid
what is the difference between dissolving and melting
heat is needed in melting whereas in dissolving two materials are needed
what does dissolving involve
it involves particles of the solute mixing with the particles of the solvent
