chemistry terms Flashcards
Atomic number
no. of protons in an atom
mass number
no of protons plus neutrons in an atom
Relative atomic mass
mass of the average of isotopes compared to 1/12 of carbon 12
Isotopes
atom with same no of protons but different no of neutrons
relative isotopic mass
mass of 1 isotope compared to 1/12 of carbon 12
relative molecular mass
mass of all the atoms in one molecule compared to 1/12 carbon 12
relative formula mass
mass of the empirical formula of a substance compared to 1/12 carbon 12
mass to charge ratio
the ratio of mass(compared to 1/12c12) to number of charges in an atom(compared to 1 electron)
ionic bond
electrostatic attraction created by the loss of electrons of one metal and the gain of electrons for one non metal, resulting in opposing charges and so attraction
covalent bond
electrostatic attraction created by the sharing of outer shell electrons to gain a full outer shell between 2 non metals
metallic bond
electrostatic attraction created by metals loosing electrons to become cations and the electrons flowing between these cations to carry charge and hold the cations together
