Chemistry Terms Flashcards
Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space
Organic Chemistry
The study of all chemicals containing carbon
Chemistry
The study of the properties of matter and how matter changes
Inorganic Chemistry
The study of substances that, in general, do not contain carbon
Biochemistry
The study of substances and processes occuring in living things
Analytical Chemistry
The area of chemistry that focuses on the composition of matter
Physical Chemistry
The area that deals with the mechanism, rate, and energy transfer that occurs when matter undergoes a change
Pure Chemistry
The pursuit of chemical knowledge for its own sake
Applied Chemistry
Research that is directed toward a practical goal or application
Technology
Way a Society provides its members with their needs and desires
Scientific Method
A logical, systematic approach to the solution of a scientific problem
Hypothesis
A proposed explanation for an observation
Observation
Information obtained through the senses.
Independent variable
Variable that is changed during an experiment
Experiment
A procedure that is used to test a hypothesis
Model
A representation of an object or event
Dependent variable
Variable that is observed during an experiment
Volume
The amount of space an object occupies
Theory
Well-tested explanation that unifies a broad range of observations
Mass
A measure of the amount of matter in an object
Scientific law
A concise statement that summarizes the results of many observations and experiments
Extensive property
A property that depends on the amount of matter in a sample
Intensive property
A property that depends on the type of matter in a sample, not the amount of matter
Substance
Matter that has a uniform and definite composition
