Chemistry Terminology Level 2 Flashcards
Define Element
Contains only ONE type of ATOM, And Cannot be broken into something smaller.
Define Compound
A Substance that is composed of Two or more different Elements
Define Mixture
A combination of substances that are non reactive
What is Avogadros Constant?
6.02214 x 10 to 23 Mol-1
What is a molecule?
Two atoms bonded together
What is the difference between Compounds and Mixtures
A compound is made up of elements bonded together while a mixture has incredients that are not bonded together.
How do you calculate the number of neutrons in an element?
The Mass number minus the Atomic Number. (it will be a positive number because you cant have negitive mass)
How do you calculate the Number of Electrons in an Elelement?
The number of Electrons is equal to the Mass number
What kind of Bonding occurs between a Metal and a Non Metal?
Ionic Bonding
What Kind of bonding occurs between two Non metal elements?
Covalent Bonding
What is an Ionic Bond?
The attraction between two opposidtley charged Ions
What is an Ion
An atom of an element which is charged (due to loosing or gaining an electron)
Give an example of an Giant Ionic Lattice
Salt NaCL is a giant ionic lattice
what is the Ph scale?
The way we measure acidicty or alkalinity
What is an Acid on the ph scale
0-6.5
What is a base on the ph scale
7.5-14
What is the difference between a Base and An Alkali
Alkalis are bases which are dissovled into water (or another soulte)
What is neutral on the ph scale
6.5-7.5
What is the first aid advice for an Acid Attack? Why?
Irrigate the wound with water and with cows Milk because cows milk is slighlty Alkalai and will neutralise the acid.
What is a molecule?
Two or more atoms bonded together
What are the properties of Giant Ionic Lattices?
They Conduct electricity in aqueous solution
They have a High melting point
They are soluble in water
Why is NaCl (Sodium Chloride) soluble in water?
The water molecules are Polarized, and therefore can pull apart the Ionic bonds between Na and Cl easily.
Why is the Melting point of sodium 806 degrees Celsius?
The Ionic bonds between Na and Cl are strong.
How do you make Ionic structures conduct electricity?
Melt them or dissolve them in water
Why does Na Cl conduct electricity? (when molten or dissolved in water)
Because the Ions are free to move, hit each other and conduct electricity.
Why isn’t NaCl conductive when solid?
The Ions are fixed in a lattice shape.
