Chemistry Term 3 KO Test Flashcards
What is an atomic number?
An atomic number is the number of protons found in a nucleus.
What is boiling?
Boiling is a physical process of turning a solid to its liquid state by raising it above its boiling point.
What is a change of state?
A change of state is the process of turning a solid to liquid and a liquid to gas, and also the reverse of these processes.
What is a charge?
A charge is a property of matter, which can be positive or negative, which attract to each other.
What is condensation?
Condensation is the process of turning a gas to a liquid.
What is a decimal point?
A decimal point is a small dot that separates whole numbers from the value indicating the amount of 1/10s and 1/100s represented.
What is deposition?
Deposition is a physical process turning a gas directly into its solid state.
What is a diameter?
A diameter is the length of the largest line across a circle, the line that goes through the midpoint. Maximum width of a sphere.
Electron
Negatively charged subatomic with negligible mass.
What is an electron shell?
An electron shell is an area found around the nucleus that will probably hold electrons. It is not a physical ‘hard ring’ but an area where electrons may be ‘found’. An energy level
Who is Ernest Rutherford?
Ernest Rutherford is a Nobel Laureate scientist who worked in Manchester and Cambridge who proposed that the had a nucleus with electrons surround it and that the atom was working in empty space.
What is the Geiger and Marsden experiment?
It is an experiment that used the scattering of alpha particles on gold leaf to suggest that some particles were deflected by large concentration leading to the idea of an atom with a nucleus.
What is an Isotope?
An isotope is an atom with the same number of protons but different number of electrons.
Who is J.J Thomson?
J.J Thomson is the person who discovered the electron and the ‘plum pudding’ model of an atom.
Who s James Chadwick?
James Chadwick is the scientist that suggested that discovered the neutron.
