Chemistry - Separating Solutions Flashcards
What does a cooling curve show?
How fast/slow something cools.
What set things do pure substances have?
Melting points and boiling points
What range of things do impure substances have?
Melting points and boiling points.
What is a Soluble?
It can be dissolved in liquid.
What is an Insoluble?
It can’t be dissolved in liquid.
What is a Solvent?
A substance (usually liquid) that can dissolve one of more substances.
What is a Solution?
A mixture of two or more substances that stay evenly mixed.
What does Concentration mean?
A relatively large amount of substance in a unit amount of a mixture.
What does Dilute mean?
Decreasing the concentration of a solute in a solution.
What does Saturated mean?
When a solvent can’t dissolve anymore of the solute.
What is Filtering/Filtration?
Separating insoluble solids and a liquid.
Give an example of a heterogeneous mixture.
A solid and a liquid. E.g. rocks and water.
What must you use for filtration?
A funnel and filter paper.
Where does the insoluble solid stay?
In the filter paper.
What does the liquid do?
It flows through the filter paper.
