Chemistry Reaction Drills Flashcards
Write what is the result when a metal oxide/ hydroxide reacts with a dilute acid? State one reason why theese products are formed.
They produce a salt + water.
Metal oxides and hydroxides are BASIC. Hence, they react with acids to NEUTRALISE (form a salt and water).
Write the general word equation and actual balanced chemical equation for the reactions between magnesium hydrogencarbonate and copper carbonate with acids respectively.
metal carbonate/ hydrogen carbonate —> salt + carbon dioxide + water
Write the balanced chemical equation for when iron reacts with steam, and write the general word equation.
(See pg. 156)
metal + steam —> metal oxide + hydrogen
Write the balanced chemical equation and general word equation for when potassium reacts with oxygen.
(See pg. 155)
metal + oxygen —> metal oxide
Write the balanced chemical equation and general word equation for when calcium and water react.
(See pg. 155)
metal + liquid water —> metal hydroxide + hydrogen
Construct a table summarizing the reactions of metals with dilute acids, oxygen and water. Construct another table summarising the effect of heat on metal carbonates, hydroxides and nitrates.
(See pgs. 156 and 157)
What are the equations for the formation of scum from a calcium salt, the formation of calcium hydrogencarbonate from limestone and rainwater with dissolved carbon dioxide, an the displacement of calcium ion in the ion-exchange column of a water softening devices? Write the name of each reactant and product below the formula in the equations. What is lime scale/ kettle fur.
[See pgs. 180-182].
