Chemistry Quiz Flashcards
What is science
- a body of knowledge
- a systematic approach to discovering our physical world
An element
A pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler parts by chemical method
A compound
A pure substance made of two or more different elements that are chemically combined
A mixture
Matter that contains more than one kind of particle
A pure substance
Matter that contains only one kind of particle
A physical property
A characteristic of a substance that can be observed and measured without changing the identity of the substance.
Eg. Physical property
- states of matter (only pure substances)
- colour
- texture
- appearance texture
- shape
2 categories of physical properties
Qualitative + quantitative
Qualitative
-Can be observed or described without detailed numerical measurement
Eg of qualitative
5 senses + ductility + malleability
Quantitative
Can be measured and assigned a unique numerical value
Eg quantitative
Melting+boiling point, mass, volume, density, viscosity, solubility, hardness, conductivity
Density
Measure of mass per volume
The slope of a mass vs. volume graph = density
Chemical properties
- By mixing 2 substances together, a change occurs and a new substance is formed
- A chemical property is the ability of a substance to change or react and form a new substance.
- different chemicals have different chemical properties or reactivity
What reacts to oxygen and Why
Metals because they are combustible
What reacts to water
Lithium, potassium, sodium, etc. burst into flames when wet
What substances react with acids and what do they produce
Carbonate substances produce carbon dioxide bubbles
Eg. Chemical properties
-combustibility, toxicity, stability
What are the five steps of the grasp method
