Chemistry Quiz Flashcards
What is indirect evidence?
Information obtained about something without seeing it or touching it
Mass of protons, electrons, neutrons?
Both protons and neutrons have a mass of 1, while electrons have almost no mass.
Charge of protons, electrons, neutrons
Protons have a positive charge, electrons have a negative charge. Neutrons don’t have a charge.
Location of protons, electrons, neutrons
Protons and neutrons= center of the atom, making up the nucleus. Electrons surround the nucleus.
What are energy levels? Electron cloud?
Amount of energy that a system can have.
What is an electron cloud?
group of electrons circulating around a nucleus.
What is a valence number?
How many electrons are gained or lost to complete the outer level.
Where are you most likely going to find an electron? Why?
In energy levels, because as you go farther from the nucleus, electrons at higher energy levels have more energy.
What are valence electrons?
How many electrons are in the outermost level.
What does a chemical symbol represent?
A chemical symbol is a shorthand method of representing an element.
What are isotopes?
The same element but with a different number of neutrons.
What is the significance of 8 electrons in an atom’s energy level?
Most of the elements need eight electrons in their outermost shell in order to be stable
What is an ionic bond?
When atoms are joined together by creating ions (gain or loss of electrons.)
What are ions?
An atom or a molecule that has a positive or negative electrical charge.
What is a covalent bond?
Chemical bond that involves the sharing of electrons to form electron pairs between atoms.
