Chemistry - Periodic Table - Groups Flashcards
Learn smart things
As you go along the groups of the periodic table, what increases?
The amount of electrons in the outer shell increases. E.g, magnesium (group 2) has 2 electrons in its outer shell whilst oxygen (group 6) in has 6 in its outer shell.
As you go down the periods of the periodic table, what increases?
The amount of outer shells in an atom increases. Potassium has 3 outer shells whilst Francium has 6.
What is the name of group 8/0?
It is known as noble gases becuase they all have a full outer shell of electrons
What is the name of the group of metals that inhabit the centre of the table?
They are called transitional metals because they are in between group 2 and 3, and have no fixed outer shell.
How are the elements ordered within their groups?
In order of reactivity. Least reactive at the top, most reactive at he bottom
How are the elements ordered within their groups?
In order of reactivity. Least reactive at the top, most reactive at he bottom
What is the name of group 7?
They are known as the halogens.
