Chemistry Part B Flashcards
Element
A substance made up of only one type of atom
Compound
A substance made up of more than one type of atom chemically combined in a fixed ratio
Mixture
Two or more substances physically combined in a variable ratio
Pure Substance
A substance that has a fixed and definite composition. All elements and compounds
Chemical Property
Chemical properties describe how a substance combines with other substances to form new chemicals or how a substance breaks down to form two or more different substances
Physical Property
Physical properties are characteristics of a substance that you can easily observe or measure without changing the actual composition of the substance.
Melting Point
the point at which materials changes from a solid to a liquid.
Boiling Point
the temperature at which a liquid changes to a gas
Solution
When a solute dissolves in a solvent, a solution is made
Density
The amount of matter(mass) in a given space(volume)
Solvent
The liquid that the solute dissolves in
Solute
Substance that dissolves
Soluble
If a substance can dissolve in a given solvent, it is said to be soluble.
Insoluble
If a substance can not dissolve in a given solvent, it is said to be insoluble.
Physical Change
Physical changes include change of shape or size, expansion or contraction, changes of state and mixing substances together.
Chemical Change
A chemical change is one in which new substances with different properties are formed.
Reactants
The starting materials in a reaction that undergo a chemical change to form a product.
Products
Mixing of to things
Chemical Equation
Reactants –> products
Corrosion
A natural process in which a refined metal is converted to a more chemically stable form
Rusting
Refers to the formation of rust, a mixture of iron oxides, on the surface of iron objects or structures
