Chemistry Organic Chemistry Flashcards
What are organic chemicals?
Organic chemicals are covalent molecules based on the element carbon
What is the key feature of carbon atoms
Carbon atoms can form four covalent bonds
How many covalent bonds do hydrogen atoms form ?
One
How many covalent bonds do oxygen atoms form ?
Two
What are functional groups?
A functional group is the part of a molecule which determines how it reacts
What are alcohols functional group?
-OH
What is a homologous series
A homologous series is organic molecules that have the same functional group but each successive member has an additional-CH2
What are hydrocarbons
Hydrocarbons are covalent compounds containing only elements carbon and hydrogen
What are saturated hydrocarbons?
Saturated hydrocarbons only have a single covalent bond between each carbon atom
What is an unsaturated hydrocarbon?
An unsaturated hydrocarbon is a hydrocarbon with a double or triple covalent bond between the carbon atoms
How to name branched hydrocarbons
Step 1: identify which suffix to use
Step 2: identify the longest continuous chain of carbon atoms
Step 3: identify any side chains and which number carbon the side chains are on
Step 4: combine the suffix, stem, and side chains to name the compound
