Chemistry of the Elements Flashcards
Test for Chlorine
Bleaches damp litmus paper, turning it white. It may go red for a moment.
Test for Hydrogen
Makes a squeaky pop with a light splint.
Test for Oxygen
Relights a glowing splint
Test for Ammonia
Turns damp red litmus paper blue
Test for Carbon Dioxide
Turns limewater cloudy.
Test for water
Turns white anhydrous copper (II) sulphate powder blue. (Hydrated copper (II) sulphate powder.
Test for pure water
Boils at 100°C and freezes at 0°C
Characteristics of Group 0 elements
Inert and colourless gases
Metal oxides are…
…basic
Non-metal oxides are…
…acidic
Lithium and water
Moves slowly around surface and fizzes
Potassium and water
Reacts vigorously and burns with a lilac flame. May explode
Sodium and water
Fizzes rapidly, moves quickly and may ignite
Why are Group 1 elements more reactive as the atomic number increases?
The 1 electron in the outer shell becomes further away from the nucleus so the attraction is smaller. This means the outer electron is more easily lost.
What colour is chlorine?
Green
