Chemistry of life: lipids Flashcards
What role do lipids play in the human body?
Lipids are used to save energy and matter
What is considered a lipid-like wax?
Fats and oils are considered lipid-like waxes
What purpose do lipid-like waxes serve?
Lipid-like waxes are responsible for water-proofing specific structures
Are fats and oils triglycerides, and how do they form?
Yes, fats and oils are triglycerides and are formed by condensation of a glycerol molecule, and 3 fatty acids
What is the difference between saturated and unsaturated fatty acids?
Saturated fatty acids only have 1 single covalent bond between their carbon atoms.
Unsaturated fatty acids have some covalent bonds between their carbon atoms
What are the differences between saturated fats and unsaturated saturated fats in regards to liquid?
Saturated fats are straight, and become solid at room temperature
Unsaturated fats are looser and stay in liquid form
How are Triglycerides created?
Triglycerides are created by condensation of glycerol, two fatty acid chains, and a head that contains phosphate
Is the tail or head hydrophilic?
The head is hydrophilic and the tail is hydrophobic
What are sterols?
Sterols and lipids that form four attached rings
What are three examples of sterols?
Chlorlestral, some vitamins, and hormones.
