Chemistry - Matter Flashcards
What does WHMIS stand for
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System
What are physical properties of matter
Describes the physical appearance and composition of a substance
- boiling point, melting point, malleability, ductility, colour, state, solubility, crystal formation, conductivity, magnetism
What are chemical properties of matter
Reactivity of substance, observed through chemical reactions
- ability to burn, flash point, behaviour in air, reaction to water, acids, heat and litmus
What is the difference between quantative and qualitative observations
Quantitive: can be measured using instruments
Qualitative: observed through senses
What are the two types of matter
Mixtures: combination that can be separated, no definite composition
Pure substance: definite composition
What are the two types of mixtures
Heterogeneous/Mechanical mixture: different components are visible, composition is variable throughout mixture
Homogeneous Mixture/Solution: different components are not visible, constant composition throughout
What are the two types of pure substances
Element: can’t be broken down chemically
Compound: two or more elements chemically combined, can be broken down
